Jungfraujoch day trips: five ways to go
The Jungfraujoch is a day trip from almost anywhere in central Switzerland, and there are five ways to organise it: a guided tour from Zurich, from Lucerne or from Interlaken, a self-guided trip with train tickets you buy yourself, or a private tour. This page does not list tour operators or tour prices. It helps you decide which type fits you and what to check in the description.
The distances explain why most tours start early. Lucerne to Interlaken Ost takes 1 hour 48 minutes on the direct hourly train. Zurich HB to Interlaken Ost takes between 1 hour 57 minutes (direct, on some dates) and 2 hours 44 minutes with changes. From Interlaken Ost the Jungfraujoch is another 1 hour 37 minutes on the fastest route.

Types of Jungfraujoch tours compared
What each type is good for and what to check.
| Type | Best for | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Guided from Zurich | Visitors based in Zurich with one free day and no wish to plan | Departure time, return time, whether the Jungfraujoch ticket is included |
| Guided from Lucerne | Visitors based in Lucerne, shorter first leg by rail | Same points, plus whether you travel by coach or by train |
| Guided from Interlaken | Visitors already in the Bernese Oberland, who want a guide at the top | Meeting point, which route is used, group size |
| Self-guided with tickets | Independent travellers who want to choose the day and the pace | Summer seat reservation, discount card, weather |
| Private tour | Families, small groups, people with special needs | Who pays the train tickets, flexible start, cancellation |
A simple rule: if you sleep in Zurich or Lucerne and want no planning, a guided trip is the easy answer. If you sleep in the Bernese Oberland, you start close to the railway, and a tour adds little beyond a guide. If you travel with a group or need a flexible start, ask for a private tour.

What tours usually include, and what to check
Descriptions differ. These are the points that decide whether a tour is good value.
The Jungfraujoch ticket
Check whether the train ticket is part of the price or must be bought separately. A return from Interlaken Ost costs CHF 271.20 in summer 2026 and CHF 140.60 with a Half Fare Card, so the ticket is the biggest part of any package.
Ticket prices →The seat reservation
From 1 May to 31 October 2026 the CHF 10 reservation is mandatory. A good description says that it is included.
Where the guide stops
On some trips the guide travels with you to the top. On others the guide leaves the group at Interlaken and you continue on your own. Ask which one it is.
Time at the top
The station area takes at least about an hour and a quarter. The last descent from the Jungfraujoch on the sample dates left between 16:41 and 18:15. Find out how many hours you really get up there.
Weather policy
Clouds can hide the view completely. Look for a free cancellation or rebooking rule. For comparison, Good Morning tickets bought in the webshop can be cancelled free until 23:59 the day before.
Transport to the valley
Some tours use a coach to Interlaken, others the normal train. Check whether the ride is part of the programme or is left to you.
Tour or on your own?
The honest trade-offs.
Pros of a tour
One booking, no timetable to read, no ticket sums, a guide to answer questions and a fixed meeting point. This helps most if you arrive in Switzerland for the first time or travel with older relatives.
Cons of a tour
The day is fixed, so a cloudy forecast can still catch you. You cannot start earlier or stay longer. A Half Fare Card or a Swiss Travel Pass may not reduce the package price.
Pros of going alone
You choose the clearest day, the route and your time at the top. With a Half Fare Card the fare from Interlaken Ost is CHF 140.60 in summer. See the route guide.
Cons of going alone
You plan the connections, the reservation and the weather yourself, and the day from Zurich or Lucerne starts very early.

Jungfraujoch tours: frequently asked questions
Can I do the Jungfraujoch as a day trip from Zurich?
Yes. Zurich HB to Interlaken Ost takes about 2 hours and the Jungfraujoch another 1 hour 37 minutes on the fastest route, so the day starts early and ends late.
Is the Jungfraujoch ticket included in a tour?
It depends on the tour. Read the description and look for the train ticket and the CHF 10 seat reservation, which is mandatory from 1 May to 31 October 2026.
Does the guide go to the top with me?
Not always. Some tours have a guide only as far as Interlaken. Ask before you book.
Is a tour cheaper than going alone?
Rarely, especially if you own a Half Fare Card. A return from Interlaken Ost costs CHF 140.60 with the card in summer 2026. Compare the package with the single ticket prices.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Check the cancellation rule in the tour description. Clouds can hide the view, and the Jungfraujoch itself is open 365 days a year.
