Weather decides, not the month
The Jungfraujoch is open 365 days a year, and snow and ice are there all year. That removes the usual question of which season to choose. What changes from day to day is visibility. On a clear day you see the Aletsch Glacier, 22 kilometres long, and as far as the Black Forest and the Vosges. In cloud you see white.
The operator publishes no official figures for the crowds by month or for the chance of a clear view, so this guide gives none either. The practical advice is the one the operator gives: choose early connections, reserve a seat on a fine day and keep your plan flexible enough to move the trip by a day or two.

How to check the weather before you go
Look at three things on the morning of your trip, or the evening before.
The forecast
Check a mountain forecast for the Jungfrau region the day before. A valley that is clear can still have cloud on the ridge, and the reverse also happens.
The webcams
The operator runs a webcam page for the Jungfraujoch. Open it before you leave and look at the current picture. If the top is in cloud, wait for the next day. We have not checked which cameras the page currently shows.
The first train
The operator recommends early connections for a relaxed visit. The first departure from Interlaken Ost is at 07:04, in high summer also at 06:34. Details on routes and times.
Tickets bought in the operator's web shop for the Good Morning Ticket can be cancelled free of charge until 23:59 the day before. That helps if the forecast turns. For other ticket types, check the conditions when you buy.

Summer or winter: what changes
Prices, reservation rules and extras differ between 1 May to 31 October and the winter season from 1 November. Figures are 2026 return fares for adults from Interlaken Ost.
| Summer (to 31 Oct 2026) | Winter (from 1 Nov 2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Adult return, Interlaken Ost | CHF 271.20 including reservation | CHF 224.40 (CHF 225.60 from 13 December) |
| With Half Fare Card | CHF 140.60 | CHF 112.20 (CHF 112.80 from 13 December) |
| Seat reservation, CHF 10 | Mandatory | Not mandatory, strongly recommended on fine days |
| Good Morning Ticket | Available | Not announced |
| Snow Fun Park | Open until 18 October 2026 | Season ended |
Winter is about CHF 36 to 37 cheaper than summer without the reservation. Prices for summer 2027 were not available at the time of writing. See the full table on the ticket prices page.
The Snow Fun Park offered a zip line of 330 metres, sledging and tubing on a 125 metre track and skiing and snowboarding. Its 2026 season ended on 18 October. The 2027 dates are not published.
Altitude and what to wear
The station is at 3,454 metres, the terrace at 3,571 metres. Plan for cold, sun and thin air whatever the season.
Temperature
It is usually below freezing, in summer and in winter. In the hottest months the values are regularly above 0 °C. We give no monthly averages because we could not verify them. The Ice Palace is at about −3 °C.
Clothing
Dress in layers, with a jacket, closed shoes, a hat and gloves. Add sunglasses against snow blindness and sun cream, even in bad weather. Children cool down faster than adults.
Altitude sickness
It can occur from about 2,500 metres. Drink plenty of water or tea, avoid alcohol, nicotine and stress and move calmly. If you feel unwell, go down quickly.
Who should ask a doctor
Anyone with a heart or circulation problem, breathlessness or anaemia. The operator does not recommend the trip after a stroke, with severe asthma or COPD, or with a cold or fever, because of the pressure change.
If it is cloudy at the top
You have already paid for the ticket, so it helps to know what is still worth it. Most of the Discovery Tour is indoors and is included in the ticket.
The Ice Palace takes about 15 minutes, the Alpine Sensation corridor with its 360° cinema and the Alpine Glow light show another 15, and the Lindt shop about 10. The lift to the Sphinx terrace is worth a try if the clouds move.
On the way, the train halts for five minutes at the Eismeer window at about 3,160 metres. The halt is not always guaranteed. If the summit is closed in, you can also spend the time at Kleine Scheidegg or Eigergletscher on the way back instead.
