The station under the Eiger
Eigergletscher lies at 2,320 metres, directly under the Eiger. Most visitors on the fast route pass through it: the Eiger Express gondola from Grindelwald Terminal ends here, and the Jungfrau Railway continues from the same station to the Jungfraujoch. From Kleine Scheidegg it is five minutes by Jungfrau Railway.
The line reached Eigergletscher on 19 September 1898, two years after the first spade cut in 1896. Construction then continued inside the mountain, via the Eigerwand station at 2,865 metres in 1903 and the Eismeer station at about 3,160 metres in 1905, up to the breakthrough at the Jungfraujoch on 21 February 1912.
